I loved watching the late-night comedy on British TV when I was a kid. Not The Nine O Clock News was by far one of my favorites and had some brilliant talent like Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, and Griff Rhys Jones....and Smith & Jones became a great duo (Mel Smith passed away in 2013 of a heart attack, sadly missed) and were a great combination in the movie Wilt, which Network Distributing is releasing a brand-new High Definition transfer from the original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio.
Henry Wilt spends his evenings walking his dog and fantasizing about murdering his domineering wife, Eva. Whilst incredibly drunk at a party, Wilt's entanglement with a lifesize inflatable doll ends culminates in him dumping it in a very convenient and very deep hole at a building site. The following morning, when his wife cannot be found, Wilt's activities attract the suspicion of the dogged but dumb Inspector Flint of Norwich CID, who firmly believes that Mrs. Wilt is now pushing up twenty tons of pre-mixed concrete...
This movie is absolute comedy gold, and it shows that the Smith & Jones duo were absolutely amazing and I personally think they are one of the greatest British comedy duos....and the great thing is that they never ever really try to force the comedy, it's all just really natural, the way they just interact with each other is perfect. The other cast is brilliant too, Alison Steadman and Diana Quick portray their characters brilliantly and it is just great. This is an amazing adaptation of the very funny book by Tom Sharpe, and even though this movie was made in 1989 it's just as funny now as it was then.
There's a nice selection of extras with interviews, theatrical trailer, TV footage (which I'm assuming is footage from the TV version? I'm not quite sure) and an image gallery. Network certainly knows how to preserve classic British cinema, and once more this is no exception. This disc will be a great addition for anyone who collects British cinema, cult, or comedy.
Wilt is rated 15 and available on DVD and Blu-Ray from 10th February in stores or from www.networkonair.com
