Blu-Ray Review: One Cut of the Dead - Hollywood Edition

You've not seen OCOTD? You must, it's epic!

You may recall last year I reviewed the comedy zombie movie One Cut of the Dead and I said I'd love to check out the other spin-offs of this movie.

Well, Third Window Films have released a limited edition run of One Cut of the Dead called Hollywood Edition, which not only has the hilarious and very clever One Cut of the Dead but the spin-off One Cut of the Dead in Hollywood as well! Let's check it out...

Well, to begin with, the Blu-Ray has the absolutely hilarious One Cut of the Dead.

A tiny, independent film with a budget of just $27,000 was able to gross over $30 MILLION domestically despite opening on just 2 screens and with an advertising budget of $0 as well as win awards in over 30 international film festivals including Fantastic Fest and Fantasia Film Festival, One Cut of the Dead is a must-see movie!

ONE CUT OF THE DEAD opens in a run-down, abandoned warehouse where a film crew is making a zombie film… But this is no ordinary warehouse. It's been rumoured that this is the site of horrible military experiments…and suddenly out of nowhere, they get the best cast that money could never buy when real zombies arrive and terrorize the cast and crew! This may sound like a plot of a clichéd zombie film, but trust me when I tell you that One Cut of the Dead truly is something completely different! Starting off with a non-stop one-take 37-minute shot, the film then completely switches direction and turns the zombie genre completely upside down by then turning into a charming, audience-friendly comedy with an ending you never saw coming! There are lessons in the merits of perseverance, the bonds of family, and the dangers of dealing with the undead of course! Director Shinichiro Ueda and his cast of non-professionals have well and truly created something fresh and so very entertaining which has become both an unexpectedly massive hit not just in its home country Japan, but all across the world!

Add to this the spinoff title One Cut of the Dead in Hollywood!

The spin-off made for TV film ONE CUT OF THE DEAD: IN HOLLYWOOD boasts more zealous zombies, most of the former cast return and get beefed up with international characters, and this time the story set in beautiful Hollywood (as the title implies). As with the original movie, the plot centres on the Higurashi family, the starlet Chinatsu, a pretty-boy actor, a cameraman suffering from a bad back, a tomboy assistant camera girl and the usual bumbling underlings and absolute chaos. Besides a couple of easy-going producers, the film has also added the new characters, Joe and Tommy. And zombies...there are more zombies than ever!!

It has been six months since the horrendous zombie attack. Chinatsu has lost her voice after the incident and she is now working as a waitress in Hollywood and is trying to start a new life. However, real zombies arrive and terrorize the crew in Hollywood.

After enjoying the double feature, you need to check out the extras on the disc! Here's what else you can enjoy on this limited run disc:

BONUS FEATURES • Making of One Cut of the Dead (45 mins) • Director Shinichiro Ueda Interview (18 mins) • Raw One Cut of the Dead GoPro footage (38 mins) • POM Instruction Video (1 min) • One Cut of the Dead Outtakes (5 min)
