Bumblebee….Transforming the Robot Franchise?

I love Transformers. The G1 toys came out when I was a wee unpopped kernel and I love the comics and cartoons too. My favourite is Starscream, he just kind of resonates with me.

So when the live action franchise started back in 2007 I thought we were in for a real treat….and the movie wasn’t too bad, but the sequels got worse and worse to the extent that when The Last Knight was released in 2017 I just didn’t want to watch it and it wasn’t until someone offered the movies to me to watch that I’d seen the full franchise (and damn TLK was damn awful just as I feared).

I honestly thought that there was no hope for the Transformers live action franchise….until Bumblebee was announced.

Bumblebee is a movie about….well, Bumblebee. A young Cybertronian warrior who is helping save the Autobots from being wiped out by the Decepticons in their war. This is his battle.

Seeing Bumblebee as a Volkswagen Beetle was absolutely awesome and just a great thing to see (don’t get me wrong, the Camero looked pretty sweet, but it just wasn’t right). Having the movies show the robots in G1 style was amazing and was the way the previous movies should have done it in the first place (although I did hear that there were companies saying they didn’t want their products used in the movies).

John Cena played a good role as the “bad guy” hunting down Bumblebee….and near the beginning of the movie there was a “You Can’t See Me” setup of sorts (not sure if that was intentional or not) which was a mix of “oh haha very good” and grating to be honest….but that was probably the worst part of the movie.

I enjoyed this movie….so much so that I am looking forward to having a copy on Blu-Ray (not felt like that about a Transformers movie in a while) when it gets released. If you are G1 fan you’re in for a treat! It has also been confirmed there are going to be sequels in the same vein, so I guess this can be considered a soft reboot.

Bumblebee is rated PG and is in 2D, 3D and IMAX now.
