Child’s Play (2019)

Again it’s time to watch another remake at the cinema…another movie from my youth has been remade.

This time it’s Child’s Play and with the talk of this being a movie with a new origin, with a Chucky for a new generation. I had to admit as much as I’m not the biggest fan of remakes it had me a little intreagued.

Most people have seen the original, a serial killer transfers his soul into a doll to live on, which then had several sequels (and apparently there will be most going straight to video and there is a also a television series in the works too). This Child’s Play reboot is different, and is “updated for the current generation” but it turns out there were issues with copying any type of kill remotely similar to the original Child’s Play movie (yes, I know…the shock that they have to do something original!! But that also means that the remake is very unlike the originals too for that very reason.) because Orion Pictures could potentially get into a lot of trouble with Universal Pictures.

Kaslan Enterprises make all sorts of technology that interacts with everything, making your home completely automated. Speakers. Drones. Vacuum Cleaners. They all interact with the Kaslan Hub which runs your home making things so much easier.

And now Kaslan have brought out Buddi, the interactive doll that syncs with your Kaslan products, imprints on you (recognising you by voice and sight) and is “your best friend….til the end”.

Yeah….like that’s not going to be dangerous at all…

So, a mother, who moves into a new neighbourhood gets her teenage Andy son a Buddi doll, and being a learning machine in a violent teenage enviroment he becomes a lethal machine with one hell of an arsenal, mostly made by Kaplan. Chucky is Andy’s best friend and wants to protect him, and will do at any cost and for the slightest thinghe will use maxinmum force. It’s not just the family who’s at risk from this psychobot, not just the building, but the whole town. No-one is safe…Chucky wants to play, and he’s your best friend ’til the end….

When I first heard about this movie I dreaded the thought of it. Child’s Play is a classic and Chucky (along with Tiffany) and icons….do they really need a reboot? Is there no originality left? Well, yes, there is…but also no it appears not. Many fans will now walk away from this franchise because of this remake, it’s damn awful…it’s nowhere near like the originals (the originality part…although they had no choice considering they were not allowed to copy kills from the original CP movies) and it just seems insane. I’m mean they could still have had possession…a ghost in the machine would have been cool. Mark Hamil was a great choice to voice Chucky (a second time he has done this) although Brad Dorif is obviously far superior and I wish they’d tried to get him to voice the killer doll. Problem with this movie is that does many lazy kills (I’m not going to go into detail on this, watch the movie and you’ll see) with Chucky in the corner.

This is a good movie if you have not watched the previous versions of Child’s Play. You could enjoy the movie and see the toy gone awry do his thing, and take heed of the warning this movie gives you. You can enjoy the awesome voice over talents of Mark Hamil and basic switch your brain off to this movie with popcorn, hotdogs and a soda. However, if you have seen the previous movies you’re not really going to like this for the most part….and oh my good the Buddi doll is a damn bloody ugly thing!! It’s a damn miracle the movie’s premise wasn’t about the doll giving kids nightmares because of how it looked!

The poster campaign they did because going up against Toy Story 4 for release day was brilliant, check these out…

And I am fairly certain this one is based on one of the new characters in Toy Story 4…although some some say it could be Annibelle which it could be…

I think these posters were a great touch and a nice bit of fun. A lof of people on the Internet were thinking that Disney would be suing Orion for this, but they can’t, they don’t look exactly like the charaters from Toy Story, but alternate coloured knockoffs. I love these posters so much they are currently my wallpapers for my phone too!

So…Child’s Play…this is not really Child’s Play, this is just not right. The pace was incredibly ploddy and just outright annoying to be fair, and when you see one of the first things that happens it just ruins it totally and it doesn’t really get good until right near the end of the movie, which is really too little too late, when I close to falling asleep. It also does not help that the Buddi dolls looks damn ugly and is most certainly something I’d not want to have at home because it looks damn awful! At least Good Guy dolls actually looked cute and could lull you into a false sense of security.

The worst news (aside from this being made…this was filmed in 6 months aparently…this could be another factor in why it was so bad) is the ending sets it up for a sequel…which is highly likely to be made. Yay.

I’m so glad the original team are still looking into making thier own Child’s Play/Chucky movies because they need to conitue. They get cheesier and goofier as they go along, but they are going to be welcomed with open arms by old school fans, myself included. Now where’s my Chucky Blu-Ray boxset…

Child’s Play (2019 Remake) is rated 18 and is in cinemas now.
