HalloSCREAM! 2020 #12 - The Driver

I've been a fan of Mark Dacascos since watching Crying Freeman (and not being able to forgive Double Dragon...one for the quest!) but the thing that always stuck in mind was him playing Eric Draven in The Crow: Stairway to Heaven. Memorable presence whether on TV or movies, Dacascos is an epic martial artist. He stars in the movie The Driver, which out now on VOD and on DVD next week.

After a plague of the undead decimates human life on earth, a former hitman, his wife, and daughter, Bree, live quietly in a survivalist compound. But when their base is attacked, a massive explosion summons a swarm of the undead. They escape and must seek out the Haven, a rumored sanctuary up north, while the father teaches his daughter to shoot, drive, and survive before time runs out.

This movie has a good story and one of the few times that "keeping it in the family" worked quite well (check out The Ballerina, for example, that was a bad call). Dacascos plays the role of father well, his wife plays the role of...wife and his daughter plays the role..of...um...daughter well. However, I feel if you watch this movie as more of a drama you'll enjoy it much more. The beginning of the movie actually has some really good action and fight scenes and shoot outs, that you would want from Mark Dacascos. Essentially, it's two movies. After the first half, I kind of felt like most movies would have ended it there. but the movie changes to this kind of road trip movie where the characters grow together. I think if they would have drawn out the first half then people would be pleased with the movie but by taking a risk and going with more of a story about how the characters deal emotionally with being in a zombie apocalypse. I think some people might be put off with the tonal shift. That's more about the relationships with a little bit of action sprinkled in here and there.

As well as this movie, there is a making of the movie featurette also on the DVD
