Pride Review: Killer Unicorn

Well, with Newcastle Pride upon us (19th-21st July 2019) I thought that I would review a movie from with an LGBT+ flavour….may I introduce to you KILLER UNICORN.

This movie is also known as KILLER UNICORNS FROM ANUSBURG (No kidding, this is the copyright title for this movie in the USA). Nice!

Danny is your run of the mill typical party boy…only interested in alcohol, drugs and sex. He and his friends are excited about going to the upcoming “Brooklyn Annual Enema Party” (one of the biggest parties in Brooklyn where the Queens and queers go to get “douched and dance”) but while he’s there he gets viciously attacked. His fabulous Drag Queen and queer friends are able to save him but not without serious consequences.

A year later, Danny is still struggling to deal with the aftermath of the horrible incident and is adamant that he will not go to the “Brooklyn Annual Enema Party” despite the peer pressure put upon him by his close friends….all they want for him to do is go face his fears (so he can hopefully get over them), get back out into the big wide world and enjoy his life.

After a new boy called PuppyPup enters Danny’s life, he decides that maybe he should give his social life and the nightlife scene of Brooklyn a second chance after all….and it isn’t until his friends start disappearing and dying in gruesome ways that Danny realises that not only is his life in peril, but also the ones who helped him on that most awful night too. A man wearing a unicorn mask is stalking and killing off the Brooklyn nightlife one Queen at a time and he will not stop until he gets his vengeance for what happened to him.

I have to admit, this is not exactly the greatest movie, but having said that it is better than I had expected it to be after seeing the trailer.  I really wanted to hype this movie up and say its awesomely epic and the best thing ever…..however, all this movie is is a lame horror movie with rainbow sprinkles, drag Queens, some attempt of fabulousness, gay sex and, of course, a killer unicorn but sadly no rainbow (boo!). In fact, this movie does border on being Quest worthy.

This movie is currently being shown in the USA only (although there was a showing in Canada February this year) with its first official showing being October last year and it is still making the rounds at film festivals. As yet I cannot find details of a UK release (or if any film festivals will screening it here in the land of the Limey) so I’m not sure what rating this movie would actually get.

Incidentally, this makes it technically 2 movies I have watched now where a unicorn has been a killer (The first being The Cabin In The Woods).

Killer Unicorn is not rated and currently not screening anywhere until 30th November (at time of writing) and that will be at the New York Horror Film Festival.
