You know, you hear about some weird killers when you watch horror movies. Axe murderers, people who come out of swamps, people who kill you in your dreams, leprechauns, people who have pins sticking out of their heads and have a thing for hooks and chains, clowns, trees, chainsaw wielding maniacs….and a tyre?

Yes this movie is Rubber, which is about a tyre called Robert (yes, you read that correctly. This damn tyre has a name. Why does this tyre have a name? Who were his parents? Where did he grow up?) who was abandoned in the desert and suddenly gains sentience in the middle of a dump while a bunch of spectators watch with binoculars at a distance thinking thay are watching a movie, about “No reason” (apparently the movie I am watching a movie about the very same kind of thing as well as I cannot see a reason for this to exist to be honest…). Then like and baby he learn to walk (sorry, roll) and then crush things…until he gets to a glass bottle where he discovered he has amazing psycho-kinetic abilities, and so he enjoys destroying things that gets in his way…like glass bottles, cans, birds, rabbits..you know the usual things that you’d do if you have that kind of ability.
Then after a short while, the tyre gets….tired and has a nap. Maybe it’s just me, but I found that one of the funniest gags in the movie. It probably wasn’t even supposed to even be funny but it was to me!
It then wheels around all carefree when it sees a lady that catches its vision and it tries to catch up after stopping her car but another car stops him. He then learns that he can make people’s heads explode!
Robert now goes on a rampage, slaughtering people who get in his way. This includes the audience, police, people who could help them get him and so on.
The police the get ready to hunt him down, and the conversation they have is great (This isn’t much of a spoiler as it’s part of the trailer)
*sheriff shows tyre* Here is our killer
Female officer – what brand is it?
Male officer – is it black?
It was some of the stupidest questions they asked really, I mean how many tyres were you expecting to see by itself rolling along?
The ending is potentially more ridiculous than the rest of the movie and could leave it open for a sequel (although I personally hope that never happens…for no reason apart from it’s damn awful) and there is a part in the credits that makes a part of the movie seem different too.
Shockingly the budget for this movie was $500,000…yes really! Now sadly the movie only made $100,370 Worldwide gross
When this movie finished, I was just left scratching my head? What the Hell did I just watch? Why did you you make this movie? “No reason.”
Quentin Dupieux, the director, is also known as Mr Oizo of Flat Beat fame. I’m not quite sure if that’s a good thing or not.
Oh, one last thing, when you watch the movie you may notice that Robert isn’t actually mentioned by name…So you may be wondering how I know how he’s called Robert….his name is in the credits.
Rubber is rated 15 and available on DVD and Digital Download.
