HalloSCREAM! #10: Spiral

No, no no....we're not discussing the next page in the book of Saw (Although I will be blogging about that as soon as it is released and I can get to view it) but something totally different. I saw this movie (the one I am currently reviewing) on Shudder and it is an exclusive on there, so let's see what it's all about.

Spiral is a movie that is set in the early '90s, Malik and Aaron, a same-sex mixed-race couple, decide to move to a house in a small town to enjoy a much better quality of life and raise their sixteen-year-old daughter Kayla with the best of strong social values. But when Malik then witnesses the neighbors throwing a very bizarre party (and inadvertently letting them know he saw it), nothing really is as it seems in their beautiful, picturesque neighborhood and something shocking has got to give. Stranger and stranger things start to happen and they feel more and more uncomfortable...little do they know that events are starting that will change the lives of the three of them forever.

I had seen the movie advertised a lot recently and I have to say it really had me intrigued...and then Awesome Cupcake also got intrigued also (this is rare, as horror is not really her thing...but she also bought Shudder because of this, so more Shudder reviews soon!).

The concept looked interesting, but this is by no means a horror. Thriller sure...but this is not a horror (although there may be people who consider horrific if other reviews are anything to go by) but it is something that makes you wonder what the hell is going on (in a good way). The movie touches on racism, homosexuality, and mental health...and this would have been a really good thing if they actually stuck to their guns...as much as I enjoyed watching this movie, it felt like a lot of things were bolted on as an afterthought...so boil it down to the main components and you have a crazy neighbor movie with a few bolt-ons that made it feel like a floppy mash-up of Hereditary and Dracula...which is watchable and enjoyable, but at the same time it's flat, slow, sloppy and overall kinda meh.

Spiral...go watch it, sure. You may enjoy it, but don't expect an epic...you're pretty much looking at a Saturday afternoon movie to pass the time. Spiral is currently on Shudder now.
